OpenAI Releases GPT-4.1 Series, Specialized AI Models for Coding

OpenAI has launched three new AI models specialized for software development, marking a significant advancement in AI tools for coding. According to reports from AP on April 14th, the company unveiled GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano, each designed with developers in mind and offering varying capabilities at different price points.


Massive Context Window and Development Focus


The flagship GPT-4.1 model features an impressive 1 million token context window, enabling it to process approximately 750,000 words at once—a capacity exceeding the length of Leo Tolstoy's epic novel "War and Peace." This extensive context window allows developers to input entire codebases, documentation, and specifications simultaneously.


OpenAI emphasized that these new models were developed with specific feedback from the developer community. The company incorporated improvements in several key areas, including:

  • Enhanced front-end coding capabilities

  • Reduced unnecessary code editing

  • More stable format compliance

  • Better adherence to response structure and order


"GPT-4.1 will be an excellent agent when performing actual software engineering," OpenAI stated in its announcement, highlighting the practical applications of these improvements for real-world development tasks.


AI Models for Coding: Performance and Competition


The release comes as OpenAI faces increasing competition from rivals like Google, Anthropic, and Chinese startup DeepSec. GPT-4.1 is positioned to compete directly with Google's recently launched Gemini 2.5 Pro, Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and DeepSec's V3 model.


According to OpenAI, GPT-4.1 outperforms its predecessors—GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini—on coding benchmarks, which are standardized evaluations of AI performance. While GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano offer slightly lower accuracy compared to the flagship model, they provide greater efficiency and faster response times, with GPT-4.1 nano being the fastest and most cost-effective option in the lineup.

Tiered Pricing Structure


OpenAI has implemented a tiered pricing structure for the new models:

  • GPT-4.1: $2 (approximately 2,800 won) per 1 million input tokens and $8 (about 11,000 won) per 1 million output tokens

  • GPT-4.1 Mini: $0.40 per million input tokens and $1.60 per million output tokens

  • GPT-4.1 Nano: $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.40 per million output tokens


This graduated pricing allows developers to select the model that best fits their specific needs and budget constraints.


Focus on Real-World Usability


Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the company's practical approach to the development of these models: "GPT-4.1's benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world usability," he stated. "Developers seem very pleased."


This focus on practical application rather than just benchmark performance suggests OpenAI is increasingly attentive to how its models function in production environments, where factors like reliability, consistency, and adherence to formatting requirements can be as important as raw capabilities.

The release of these specialized coding models reflects the growing importance of AI assistants in software development workflows.
